France forward Hugo Ekitike will miss the upcoming World Cup after suffering a serious Achilles tendon injury, according to national team manager Didier Deschamps.
The injury happened during Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final match against Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Ekitike went down during the game, and later reports confirmed he had ruptured his Achilles tendon, one of the most serious injuries in football. The injury is expected to keep him out for a long period.
Speaking on Wednesday, Deschamps confirmed that the 23-year-old striker will not recover in time to play any part in the World Cup or finish the current season with Liverpool.
He described the situation as very unfortunate for both the player and the national team, as Ekitike had been expected to play an important role for France in the tournament.
The injury is a major setback for Liverpool as well, with the club losing another attacking option during a crucial stage of the season. Medical experts say Achilles injuries often require many months of recovery and rehabilitation.
Ekitike had been in strong form this season and was seen as one of the rising talents in French football. His absence will force both club and country to rethink their attacking plans.
For now, the focus will be on his recovery process, with no clear timeline for his return to competitive football.
