Nigerian Army General Killed in Overnight Militant Assault, Military Says Attack Repelled.

Maiduguri, April 9, 2026 — A senior Nigerian army officer has been killed following a series of coordinated overnight attacks by Islamist militant groups in the country’s northeastern region, according to military sources.

Fighters linked to Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province carried out assaults on multiple locations across Borno State late Wednesday, targeting both towns and military installations.

Coordinated Attacks Across Borno State

According to Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, militants first launched attacks in the towns of Pulka and Bakin Ruwa in the Gwoza district before advancing toward a major military base in Benisheikh around midnight.

The military stated that troops stationed at the base resisted the assault and ultimately forced the attackers to retreat after intense fighting. Officials praised the response of soldiers, describing it as courageous and effective, while confirming that casualties had been recorded.

Conflicting Reports on Casualties

While the military has acknowledged the loss of personnel, it has not released detailed figures, citing the need to notify families first. However, sources within the military indicated that the attack may have been more severe than officially described.

According to these sources, the base in Benisheikh was temporarily overrun during the clash, leading to the death of a brigade commander, along with several other soldiers. Reports also suggest that military equipment and vehicles were destroyed during the attack.

These claims have not been independently verified.

Air Support and Ongoing Operations

Reinforcements, including air force support, were deployed to the area. Military aircraft reportedly assisted in pushing back the insurgents and evacuating the bodies of fallen soldiers on Thursday morning.

Security forces have since launched clearance operations to track down remaining militants in the region.

Long-Running Insurgency

Nigeria’s northeast has been affected by a prolonged insurgency for over 17 years, resulting in thousands of deaths and displacing millions of people. Despite ongoing military campaigns, militant groups continue to carry out attacks, often targeting remote areas where security presence is limited.

In recent months, both Boko Haram and ISWAP have intensified their operations, focusing on military positions and exploiting difficult terrain and weak infrastructure in the region.

Security Challenges Persist

The latest attack highlights ongoing security challenges in northeastern Nigeria, where armed groups remain active despite sustained efforts by government forces.

Analysts say that without stronger control of rural areas and improved border security, militants are likely to continue launching coordinated assaults, posing a persistent threat to both civilians and the military.
