EU’s Von der Leyen Welcomes 10-Day Israel–Lebanon Ceasefire

Ursula von der Leyen has welcomed the announcement of a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, describing it as a positive step after weeks of intense conflict.

The ceasefire was announced by US President Donald Trump and is seen as an attempt to reduce violence and open space for further diplomatic negotiations in the region.

Von der Leyen said the temporary pause in fighting is a relief, noting that the conflict has already caused significant loss of life and humanitarian suffering. She stressed that Europe continues to support Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, she also said the European Union will continue providing humanitarian assistance to the Lebanese people, who have been heavily affected by ongoing hostilities.

The announcement was also welcomed by Kaja Kallas, who described the ceasefire as an urgent opportunity to reduce violence and ease pressure on civilians caught in the conflict.

Kallas said that both sides should confirm and respect the ceasefire so that it can hold in practice. She added that the pause in fighting should be used to create space for renewed negotiations aimed at achieving a more lasting peace agreement.

The ceasefire comes after weeks of escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon, which have raised concerns across Europe and the wider international community about regional stability.

European officials have repeatedly called for de-escalation and protection of civilians, warning that continued fighting risks worsening the humanitarian situation in Lebanon.

The EU leadership also emphasised that any ceasefire must be respected by both parties to avoid a return to violence. They argue that even short-term truces can play an important role in reducing immediate suffering and opening diplomatic channels.

Humanitarian organisations have also expressed hope that a temporary halt in fighting will allow aid to reach affected areas more effectively, especially in regions where access has been difficult due to ongoing clashes.

While the ceasefire is currently limited in duration, European leaders say it could serve as a foundation for broader peace efforts if both sides commit to maintaining calm and engaging in negotiations.

For now, international attention remains focused on whether the agreement will hold beyond the initial 10-day period and whether it can lead to a longer-term reduction in tensions in the region.
