Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for the European Union to reduce strict rules on artificial intelligence used in industry, saying lighter regulation is needed to boost productivity and economic growth.
Speaking at the Hannover Messe industrial fair in Germany, Merz said AI designed for factories, manufacturing, and other industrial applications should face fewer restrictions than AI used by consumers. He argued that the current EU regulatory framework is too rigid and slows down innovation.
According to Merz, industrial AI can improve efficiency, lower costs, and help companies use resources more effectively. He said easing rules would allow Europe to compete better with the United States and China, both of which are leading in global AI development.
Germany has been working to strengthen its position in the AI sector and attract investment in advanced technologies. The government recently announced plans to significantly increase the country’s data processing capacity over the coming years.
