Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi spoke with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday, urging Tehran to calm tensions in the Middle East and ensure the safety of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Takaichi said she welcomed the recent ceasefire between Iran and the U.S. and expressed hope that a final agreement would be reached quickly through diplomacy.
Japan relies on the Middle East for 90% of its oil, much of which passes through the strategic Hormuz waterway. The country has had to use its energy reserves to cope with disruptions caused by the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran.
Under the ceasefire, Tehran is expected to pause its blockade of the Strait, a key route that handles about 20% of global oil shipments.
Takaichi also raised the case of a Japanese journalist previously detained in Iran and requested a full resolution of the matter.
This phone call highlights Japan’s concern over energy security and the stability of international shipping routes in the wake of regional tensions.
