Ibrahima Konaté has revealed he is close to agreeing a new contract with Liverpool, giving fans hope that the defender will remain at Anfield beyond this season.
The 26-year-old centre-back, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35 million, is approaching the final months of his current deal. Despite growing speculation about his future, Konate has made it clear that he has always intended to stay at the club.
Speaking after Liverpool’s recent Merseyside derby victory, Konate confirmed that talks with the club are progressing well and an agreement is within reach.
“There are many things people have said, but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement,” he said. “We are in a good way.”
He also suggested that there is a strong possibility he will still be a Liverpool player next season, adding, “For sure, there is a big chance that I’m here next season. This is what I’ve always wanted.”
Konate hinted that he had made his intentions clear to Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes early in the process, long before public speculation intensified. He suggested that once the deal is finalized, more details about those conversations may emerge.
Contract Delays Not Unusual at Anfield
When asked why negotiations have taken so long, Konate pointed to similar situations involving teammates such as Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah in previous seasons.
He indicated that delayed contract resolutions may be part of the club’s usual approach, saying the situation is “exactly the same” as past cases.
In recent years, Liverpool have faced several high-profile contract situations, with key players often entering the final stages of their deals before extensions are agreed. This has created uncertainty at times but has not always led to departures.
Key Player Since Arrival
Since joining Liverpool, Konate has become an important part of the team’s defense. He has made over 100 Premier League appearances and played a role in several major achievements, including the club’s league title win and domestic cup successes in 2022.
Although Liverpool are set to finish this season without a trophy, they remain in a strong position to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League. They currently sit inside the top five and have a comfortable points gap over the chasing teams.
Despite this, Konate admitted that the team’s overall performance has not met expectations.
“It’s been a bad season for the standards of Liverpool,” he said. “If we finish in the top four, we won’t be happy, for sure.”
He stressed the need for improvement next season, adding that the squad must “give everything” to return to competing for major honours.
Personal Challenges Behind the Scenes
While Konate’s future at Liverpool looks increasingly secure, the defender has faced a difficult period off the pitch.
In January, he suffered a personal loss when his father passed away in France. The tragedy came during a challenging season for the player, both professionally and emotionally.
Despite being granted compassionate leave, Konate offered to return early to support the team during a time when Liverpool were dealing with defensive injuries. His commitment was widely noted and appreciated by those at the club.
“It was a tough year because many things happened,” he said. “If everyone knew exactly what happened to me, they could understand the sacrifices I’ve made for this club.”
He added that the experiences of this season will remain an important part of his personal story, describing it as both “sad” and meaningful.
Improved Form and Renewed Focus
After a difficult spell earlier in the season, Konate’s performances have improved in recent weeks. With speculation about a possible move—at one point linking him with European giants—now fading, he appears more settled on the pitch.
Observers have noted that his form has picked up, and he has re-established himself as a key figure in Liverpool’s defensive line.
His emotional return to action after his bereavement was marked by a memorable moment at Anfield, where he celebrated a goal in tears during a dominant win over Newcastle. The scene highlighted both his resilience and his strong connection to the club.
Looking Ahead
With negotiations nearing completion, Liverpool fans will be encouraged by the prospect of Konate committing his future to the club.
Securing his contract would provide stability in defense as the team prepares for a crucial summer rebuild and aims to return to competing at the highest level.
For now, Konate remains focused on finishing the season strongly and ensuring Liverpool secure Champions League qualification. Once that objective is achieved, attention will turn fully to finalizing the deal that could keep him at Anfield for years to come.
