Liverpool manager Arne Slot says his team still believe they can produce a “special” comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final at Anfield on Tuesday.
PSG take a strong advantage into the return fixture after winning the first leg 2–0 in Paris, where Liverpool struggled badly and failed to register a single shot on target. Slot admitted after that match that his side were fortunate the defeat was not heavier.
Despite that, the Liverpool boss insisted the tie is still alive and pointed to his team’s attacking record at home as a reason for belief. He said Liverpool have scored two or more goals in 36 of their last 50 matches at Anfield, suggesting they are capable of overturning difficult situations.
Historically, however, the task is steep. Liverpool have only come back from a two-goal or more first-leg deficit in European competition twice in 13 attempts, including famous recoveries against Auxerre in 1991 and FC Barcelona in 2019.
Slot stressed that while belief exists inside the squad, the performance level must be significantly improved if they are to progress.
He also highlighted PSG’s quality, describing them as one of the strongest sides in Europe, and warned that Liverpool must be “very, very special” to overturn the deficit.
The manager called on the Anfield crowd to play a major role in driving the team forward, saying the atmosphere will be just as important as tactics and performance on the pitch. He compared the expected intensity to previous famous European nights at Anfield, where the crowd helped inspire dramatic comebacks.
Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai echoed Slot’s optimism, saying the players fully believe in their ability and are ready to give everything over 90 minutes—or even extra time if needed. He said the squad’s mentality remains strong and that anything is possible in a single match.
Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté acknowledged that PSG may have an advantage after their domestic match was postponed, giving them extra rest and preparation time. However, he said Liverpool are experienced enough to handle the situation and must focus on their own performance.
There is also growing interest in young forward Rio Ngumoha, who has recently impressed with his composure and attacking ability. Slot suggested the teenager could feature in the match, praising his confidence, technical skill, and ability to take on defenders.
Liverpool go into the match needing at least two goals to level the tie, with the possibility of extra time if they win by a two-goal margin. PSG, however, remain strong favourites to reach the semi-finals after their commanding first-leg performance.
Tuesday night’s clash is expected to be played in a highly charged Anfield atmosphere, with Liverpool hoping to recreate some of their most famous European comebacks.
