Philippines sets condition for any energy deal with China

The Philippines has said that any future oil and gas cooperation with China must fully follow its constitution and respect its national sovereignty.

The country’s Department of Foreign Affairs made this clear after reports that Manila and Beijing may restart talks on energy projects in the disputed South China Sea.

Both countries have long had disagreements over territory in the South China Sea. Because of this, any cooperation on oil and gas is considered sensitive.

The Philippines stressed that any agreement will only be approved if it follows national laws and protects the country’s rights over its territory and resources.

China’s embassy in Manila has not yet responded to the statement.

Recently, the two countries resumed discussions about possible cooperation in energy and fertilizer supply, especially as global tensions affect energy markets.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has said the country must improve its energy security and ensure stable and affordable power supplies.

At the same time, Manila is trying to balance economic cooperation with China and protecting its territorial claims in the disputed waters.
