Portugal has expressed confidence that its airports will not face jet fuel shortages in the coming months, even as concerns grow across Europe over potential fuel supply risks during the busy travel season.
According to the government, the country is closely monitoring fuel supplies and remains in contact with energy companies to ensure stable operations at major airports.
Portuguese Infrastructure Minister Miguel Pinto Luz said authorities are aware of current stock levels at national airports but did not disclose exact figures. He stressed that the government is actively working with suppliers to prevent any disruption.
European airlines have raised concerns that global instability, including tensions linked to the Middle East, could affect jet fuel availability. Europe relies heavily on imports for aviation fuel, with a significant share coming from outside the continent.
However, Portugal believes it is in a stronger position compared to some other European countries due to its supply structure. The country’s main supplier, Galp Energia, sources crude oil largely from Brazil and processes it domestically at its Sines refinery, helping reduce exposure to external supply shocks.
The company has stated that no disruptions are expected in the near term. It added that current demand is being met through a combination of local production, existing stockpiles, and imports.
Galp has also taken additional steps to strengthen its supply chain and ensure steady fuel availability for airports across Portugal.
Authorities say that while the situation remains stable in the country, they will continue to monitor developments at the European level closely. The government emphasized that maintaining uninterrupted fuel supply for aviation remains a key priority, especially ahead of the peak tourism season.
For now, Portugal expects airport operations to continue normally without any fuel-related disruptions.
