Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine to mark the Orthodox Easter holiday, signaling a short pause in the ongoing conflict.
According to the Kremlin, Russian forces have been ordered to stop combat operations for approximately 32 hours, starting Saturday afternoon and lasting through Sunday. Troops have also been instructed to remain alert in case of any attacks or violations during the truce.
Ukraine’s Response and Prior Proposal
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier proposed a similar Easter ceasefire through U.S. intermediaries. He emphasized the need for a peaceful holiday and expressed hope that both sides could move toward reducing hostilities.
Ukraine has consistently called for temporary pauses in fighting to allow civilians relief from ongoing violence. However, it has not yet officially responded to Russia’s latest announcement.
Accusations of Violations
Despite the ceasefire declaration, tensions remain high. Russian officials have already accused Ukraine of launching attacks during the truce period, including strikes in occupied areas and drone incidents inside Russian territory.
These claims have not been independently confirmed, and Ukraine has not issued a response regarding the allegations.
