Mogadishu, April 10, 2026 — Turkey has launched its first-ever overseas deep-sea oil exploration project, with a drilling vessel arriving off the coast of Somalia.
The Turkish drillship, Cagri Bey, reached waters near Mogadishu to begin operations, marking a significant step in Turkey’s efforts to expand its energy exploration activities beyond its borders.
Historic Energy Initiative
Turkey’s Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar described the mission as a milestone, signaling a new phase in the country’s oil and gas exploration strategy.
The offshore well is expected to reach depths of around 7,500 meters, placing it among the deepest drilling operations worldwide.
Boost for Somalia’s Energy Sector
Somalia has welcomed the project as a major opportunity to develop its natural resources. The country’s Mineral Resources Minister Dahir Shire Mohamed called the arrival of the drilling vessel a historic moment and expressed hope that it would help unlock the nation’s energy potential.

The drilling campaign is expected to continue for approximately 10 months, during which exploration activities will assess the presence of oil reserves beneath the seabed.
