Ukraine–Russia Easter Ceasefire Collapses Amid Fresh Fighting

Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of violating a short Orthodox Easter ceasefire, just hours after it was introduced in their ongoing four-year war.

Moscow claimed there were nearly 2,000 breaches of the truce overnight, including drone activity and shelling, while Kyiv reported hundreds of attacks and thousands of drone strikes by Russian forces during the same period.

Despite the temporary pause intended for Easter, fighting reportedly continued across multiple frontlines. A Ukrainian soldier said Russian drones were still operating in active combat zones, preventing recovery efforts for fallen troops.

Russia also reported civilian casualties from Ukrainian attacks in border regions, while Ukraine said Russian drone strikes injured civilians in its Kharkiv region. Independent verification of battlefield claims remains difficult.

The Kremlin described the ceasefire as a humanitarian gesture ordered by President Vladimir Putin, but officials warned that Russian forces would resume operations once the truce ends. Ukraine had agreed to the pause, though both sides have previously accused each other of breaking similar agreements.

The temporary ceasefire is expected to expire at midnight local time, with renewed fighting likely to follow.
