A United States military airman has been rescued after surviving for more than a day inside Iran, following the downing of his fighter jet, in what officials describe as a complex and high-risk operation.
The service member, who was flying an F-15 aircraft, reportedly managed to avoid capture despite landing in hostile territory. According to US officials, he took shelter in a mountainous area, relying on limited survival equipment including a sidearm, a communication device and a tracking beacon. He is said to have moved across difficult terrain while awaiting rescue.
The recovery mission involved a large deployment of US forces, with hundreds of military and intelligence personnel taking part.
