Scott Bessent, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, has said that China has acted like an “unreliable global partner” during the ongoing Middle East conflict by increasing oil stockpiles and restricting exports of some goods.
Speaking to reporters in Washington, he said China’s actions were similar to its behaviour during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it was accused of hoarding medical supplies.
Bessent said he has already discussed the issue with Chinese officials. However, he did not confirm whether the disagreement could affect a planned visit by U.S. President Donald Trump to Beijing later this month.
He added that both the United States and China continue to maintain communication at a high level, including between leaders Xi Jinping and Donald Trump.
According to Bessent, the focus of current talks is to keep relations stable despite growing tensions linked to global energy markets and the Middle East war.
He also said that regular communication between the two countries remains important to avoid further escalation and to manage economic pressure caused by the conflict.
