The Champions League has shone a spotlight on some of the world’s top goalkeepers, sparking renewed debate about who currently ranks as number one in the position. Exceptional performances from David Raya and Manuel Neuer have set fans and pundits talking ahead of major international tournaments.
David Raya – Arsenal
David Raya impressed in Arsenal’s 1-0 Champions League win over Sporting, making four crucial saves, including tipping a powerful Maxi Araujo strike onto the crossbar. Since last season, Raya has played 23 Champions League matches, conceding just 12 goals and preventing nine expected goals, while keeping 22 clean sheets, the most among Europe’s top-five leagues.
Although nominated for the 2025 Yashin Trophy, he did not finish in the top three. Spain manager Luis de la Fuente considers Unai Simon as the undisputed first choice for the national team, leaving Raya outside the international spotlight. Former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon praised him as “world class,” highlighting his command of the defense.
Manuel Neuer – Bayern Munich
At 40 years old, Manuel Neuer continues to defy age. His 136th Champions League appearance saw him deliver a stellar performance in Bayern Munich’s victory at Real Madrid. Legendary keeper Peter Schmeichel described his save against Kylian Mbappe as “probably the best of the season.”
Neuer has 12 Bundesliga titles, two Champions League trophies, and a World Cup, though he has never been nominated for the Yashin Trophy. Following his heroics, German media has suggested a possible return to the national team, where Oliver Baumann is currently first choice.
Thibaut Courtois – Real Madrid
Currently sidelined with a thigh injury, Thibaut Courtois has been vital for Real Madrid. Over 23 Champions League games since last season, he made 105 saves with a 78.2% save rate, conceding 29 goals. His manager, Alvaro Arbeloa, called him “the best goalkeeper in history.” Courtois previously won the Yashin Trophy in 2022 and has two Champions League titles with Real Madrid.
Emiliano Martinez – Aston Villa
World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022, Emiliano Martinez has won multiple accolades, including the Yashin Trophy in 2023 and 2024. Described as “the best goalkeeper in the world” by manager Unai Emery, Martinez made 49 saves in 12 Champions League appearances last season, boasting an 80% save rate.
Alisson – Liverpool
Alisson continues to shine for Liverpool, particularly in the Champions League. His 86.1% save rate over 12 games last season included 37 key saves, helping Liverpool achieve notable victories. Alisson won the inaugural Yashin Trophy in 2019 and has remained among the world’s elite goalkeepers ever since.
Gianluigi Donnarumma – Manchester City
Donnarumma has been Manchester City’s first-choice goalkeeper since September. Guardiola praised his commanding presence on big stages, though he has occasionally struggled with the Premier League’s physicality. Over 24 Champions League games since last season, he has conceded 25 goals and kept nine clean sheets. He has won the Yashin Trophy twice but has yet to play in a World Cup.
Mike Maignan – AC Milan
Replacing Donnarumma at AC Milan, Mike Maignan has cemented himself as one of the top goalkeepers in Europe. In his debut season, he helped Milan win their first Scudetto in 11 years, leading the league in clean sheets and save percentage. Former Brazil keeper Dida described him as “the best in the world,” with Raya and Donnarumma close behind.
Honourable Mention: Yassine Bounou
Yassine Bounou, now with Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, ranked third for the Yashin Trophy in 2023. He was crucial for Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, saving two penalties in the semi-final. Morocco were later awarded the title following a controversial overturning of the final.
This crop of goalkeepers illustrates the depth of talent at the highest level, blending experience, consistency, and game-changing performances across Europe and the world stage.
