President of Turkey has promised tougher gun-control measures after a series of rare but deadly school shootings that shocked the country and raised concerns about public safety.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that the government will tighten rules on gun ownership and introduce stronger penalties for adults whose children gain access to firearms. His announcement comes after last week’s tragic school attacks in southern Turkey.
The shootings took place in the southeastern province of Kahramanmaras, where two separate incidents involving students left a total of nine people dead, including eight pupils and one teacher. The attacks have deeply shocked the nation, where school shootings are extremely rare.
