Kyiv Shooting Death Toll Rises to Seven After Hospital Death

The death toll from a shooting incident in Ukraine’s capital has risen to seven after another victim died in hospital, according to the country’s prosecutor general.

Ruslan Kravchenko said on Monday that a man injured in the attack has now died, bringing the total number of people killed to seven. The incident took place in Kyiv over the weekend and has been described by authorities as a serious violent attack.

The shooting occurred on Saturday in a residential area of Kyiv. A man, reportedly of Russian origin, opened fire on pedestrians using an automatic weapon. After the attack, he entered a nearby supermarket and took hostages. Police later stormed the building and shot the attacker dead.

Authorities say the situation unfolded quickly and caused panic in the area. Emergency services were sent to the scene immediately, and several injured people were taken to hospital.

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed earlier that seven people, including a child, were receiving treatment in hospital. He added that four of the victims were in intensive care due to the severity of their injuries.

In a strong statement, Kravchenko said the case is being treated as a terrorist act. He also raised serious concerns about the actions of police officers who were present during the incident.

According to Kravchenko, video evidence from the scene shows that some officers ran away instead of helping victims or confronting the shooter. He said two police officers have now been formally notified that they are under suspicion as part of the investigation.

He claimed that the patrol team had weapons and legal authority to respond but failed to take action. As a result, the attacker was able to continue firing at civilians on the street.

Kravchenko added that this failure to act may have contributed to the number of casualties.

The incident has shocked Ukraine, where mass shootings of this nature are extremely rare. The country’s security services are now investigating the case as a possible terrorist attack, although officials have not yet confirmed the motive behind the shooting.

Authorities are also looking into how the attacker obtained a firearm permit. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko has said the case raises serious questions about gun control rules and public safety procedures.

The shooting has sparked wider debate in Ukraine about civilian safety, self-defense rights, and law enforcement readiness during emergencies. Officials are expected to release more details as the investigation continues.

For now, the focus remains on treating the injured, understanding how the attack was carried out, and determining whether failures by police contributed to the deadly outcome.
