Italian Police Probe Pylon Damage Linked to Transalpine Pipeline Disruption

Milan, April 11, 2026 — Authorities in Italy are investigating damage to an electricity transmission pylon that caused a temporary disruption to the Transalpine Pipeline last month, amid reports suggesting possible sabotage.

The incident, which occurred near the northeastern city of Udine on March 25, interrupted energy flows along the pipeline, which transports crude oil from the port of Trieste to refineries across Central Europe.

Investigation Underway

Grid operator Terna Rete Elettrica Nazionale SpA confirmed that it had alerted police after the damage was discovered. The company said the cause of the incident remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.

While no injuries or major property damage were reported, the disruption affected pipeline operations for several days before repairs were completed.

Impact on Fuel Supply

The disruption raised concerns about fuel supplies to key European facilities, including the Mineraloelraffinerie Oberrhein (MiRO), one of Germany’s largest refineries.

A spokesperson for the refinery said it did not receive crude oil via the pipeline for approximately three days and had to rely on existing reserves during that period.

Conflicting Reports

Media outlets in Germany had earlier suggested that the damage might have been the result of deliberate sabotage targeting critical energy infrastructure.

However, pipeline operator TAL rejected claims of external interference, stating that reports of third-party attacks on its facilities were inaccurate.

Maintenance and Operations

TAL also noted that part of its infrastructure is currently undergoing routine maintenance, including a scheduled shutdown of one of its marine terminal jetties until later this month.

Broader Concerns

The incident highlights growing concerns about the vulnerability of Europe’s energy infrastructure, especially amid heightened geopolitical tensions and increased scrutiny over supply security.

Authorities are continuing to assess the situation to determine whether the disruption was accidental or intentional.
