Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has urged China to take a more active role in global affairs, saying the world is moving towards a multipolar order where responsibility must be shared among major powers.
Speaking during a visit to Beijing, Sánchez said China should increase its involvement in key international issues, including climate change, global security, artificial intelligence regulation, and efforts to reduce global inequality. He also called for stronger cooperation to address ongoing conflicts in regions such as Ukraine and the Middle East.
The Spanish leader said Europe must also strengthen its global role, particularly as the United States steps back from leadership in some international areas. He argued that Europe should “redouble its efforts” to remain influential in shaping global stability.
Sánchez made the comments during a lecture at Tsinghua University, where he also highlighted the importance of maintaining open economic relations with China despite wider geopolitical tensions.
He noted that China accounts for a large share of Spain’s trade imbalance and said Madrid aims to boost exports in sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing to create a more balanced trade relationship.
During his visit, Sánchez is also expected to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, with discussions likely to focus on global politics, trade, and long-term cooperation.
The visit comes as several European leaders continue to balance economic engagement with China against growing strategic and security concerns. Analysts say Sánchez’s remarks reflect a broader shift in Europe’s approach as global power becomes more distributed among multiple major actors.
