US Orders Brazilian Security Official to Leave Amid Diplomatic Tensions

The United States has asked a Brazilian security official to leave the country, signaling rising tensions between Washington and Brazil.

The official, Marcelo Ivo de Carvalho, served as Brazil’s security attaché and worked closely with U.S. immigration authorities while based in Miami. His role involved coordination on security and immigration matters between the two countries.

The move comes shortly after U.S. immigration authorities briefly detained Brazilian intelligence chief Alexandre Ramagem. Ramagem had fled Brazil after being convicted over an alleged coup plot linked to former president Jair Bolsonaro.

In a statement, the U.S. State Department said no foreign official should misuse the American immigration system to avoid extradition or extend political disputes onto U.S. soil. Although the statement did not directly name de Carvalho, the U.S. Embassy later confirmed he was the person asked to depart.

Brazilian authorities, including the foreign ministry and federal police, have not yet responded publicly to the development.

The incident highlights growing diplomatic friction between the two nations, particularly over legal and political issues involving high-profile Brazilian figures now outside the country.
