April 7, 2026 — Aaron Ramsey has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35, bringing an end to a distinguished career for both club and country.
The former Arsenal midfielder had been without a club since leaving Pumas UNAM in 2025. He is now expected to move into coaching as the next step in his career.
Ramsey bows out as one of the greatest players in the history of the Wales national team. He scored 21 goals in 86 appearances and represented his country at three major international tournaments.
He played a key role in Wales’ remarkable journey to the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2016, where his performances earned him a place in the tournament’s official team. He later featured in UEFA Euro 2020 and the FIFA World Cup 2022, marking Wales’ first World Cup appearance in over six decades.
At club level, Ramsey began his career with Cardiff City before joining Arsenal in 2008. During his 11 years in London, he won three FA Cups—scoring the decisive goal in two finals and becoming a fan favourite.
He later played for Juventus and Nice, and also had a loan spell at Rangers, helping them reach the 2022 Europa League final.
Ramsey briefly returned to Cardiff City towards the end of his career, where he also took on a short-term role as interim head coach, hinting at his future ambitions in management.
In a message announcing his retirement, Ramsey thanked fans, teammates, coaches, and his family for their support throughout his journey. He paid special tribute to Wales supporters, known as the “Red Wall,” for standing by the team through both successes and challenges.
His retirement marks the end of an era for Welsh football, with Ramsey leaving behind a legacy defined by leadership, technical skill, and memorable moments on the biggest stages.
